Joan King

I am sure you will all be sad to hear that John King's wife Joan died recently. I was in hospital at the time so you may have already heard the following information but as John played a big part in the work of the KCA for many years including rescuing the Rootes Trophy from extinction in the 1950s by instituting our now famous Reliability Trial, & running it for many years, I want to be sure that the news reaches all his Kent cycling friends. Joan's funeral is on Wednesday 8th July. She will be laid to rest at a private family service in Swanley, followed by a thanksgiving service at St Peters Church, College Road, Hextable which will commence at 12.15 p.m. John has requested no flowers but a donation to the Ellenor/Lions hospice would be appreciated. After the service there will be a gathering. We assume that details will be announced at the service. I hope that the KCA will be able to make a suitable donation to the above fund as John played such a large part in the success of the Association from the 1950s onwards.

Bill Finch's Seat

Roy Canning has let us have details of the ceremony to inaugurate Bill Finch’s seat on Saturday 22nd August 2009 at 2:00 pm. During the ceremony Chris Finch, or one of Bill’s children, will affix the inscribed plate into position.
Anyone who would like to attend will be welcome.
 Bill's Bench
The seat is installed in Trosley Country Park at the top of the North Downs (TQ 645 615) External web site We will meet in the park Café and Car Park External web site The seat location is quite a way from the car park, probably about twenty minutes steady but not brisk walk away, so we will have to leave at about 1:30pm. The path to it can be ridden for those on two or three wheels, but ride with care as it is shared by walkers.
You can get nearer the site if you park in Erskin Road or the Vigo Village Shop’s car park which is about 10 minutes walk away straight along the marked footpath opposite Beech Mast Road. I will have map details at the car park. Be warned though that from whichever direction you come the final approach is via some steep steps.
To get to Trosley Country Park, from the M25 leave at Junction 3 (Swanley) and take the M20 or A20 coastbound. Take the next exit (M20) to the A20 and the A227 Gravesend bound. After about 2 miles you arrive at a 40MPH limit sign followed by a crossroad with “The Vigo” pub on one corner. About 150 yards afterwards turn right, then right again, then second right. Signs direct you from the A227 to Trosley Country Park. There is a fee of about £1.50 for the car park.
Coming westwards take the A20 towards Wrotham or leave the M20 to join the M26 at Junction 3. Soon afterwards take the next slip-road to join the A20 London bound, also signposted A227. At the Borough Green/Wrotham roundabout the A20 combines with the A227 as far as the following roundabout, Keep to the right and follow the signs for the A227, Gravesend. Once over the second roundabout continue as above to the 40MPH sign.
